Ragusa has been inhabited since the 2nd Millennium BC. It has a lower part called Ragusa Ibla, which is the ancient part, and an upper part Ragusa Superiore that was constructed after a devastating earthquake in 1693. The two cities were joined in 1926 to create the capital of the province of Ragusa.

Ragusa is home to some magnificent Baroque architecture as well as some beautiful gardens. There are several churches housing masterworks of art. Ragusa is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Late Baroque Towns of the Val di Noto. Ragusa is also famous as the site of the Inspector Montalbano series.
